17.06.2009 :: Genesis 24

Anglican Cycle of Prayer:
Psalm: 11:1-5,7 Jdg 6:1,11-32
Orlu - (Province of Owerri, Nigeria) The Most Rev'd Bennett C I Okoro

Reading:
Genesis 24

Thoughts:
Before you get all worked up about the girl having to marry someone she's never met, be aware that this is a time of arranged marriages, and she is a cousin to Isaac.

The other thing that is important here is that, before the servant heads off to find the girl, he swears that if the girl doesn't want to marry Isaac, he will leave her there and come home without her. This is at Abraham's behest. So the girl did have a choice.

What I think is most interesting about this story is the fact that the servant prayed for guidance, established a sign that would let him know it was the right girl, and then followed through on everything. And the girl said yes in the end, so it really did work out for everyone.

(Well, sort of. But we'll get to that.)
